8 Days Great Migration Safari - Calving Season

DESTINATIONS

Arusha | Tarangire  | Serengeti |  Ngorongoro Crater | – Departure.

The Great Migration Calving Season: is a breathtaking phase of the Serengeti’s annual wildlife cycle, occurring between late January and early March in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region (which lies between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area). During this time, the vast open plains transform into a nursery for over 500,000 wildebeest calves, creating one of the most remarkable natural events in the world.

A SEASON OF RENEWAL & ABUNDANCE

As the short rains (November–December) nourish the landscape, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains turn lush and green, providing the perfect conditions for wildebeest mothers to give birth. The region’s rich, mineral-filled grasslands ensure that newborns receive the nutrients they need to grow strong before embarking on their journey northward.

THE MIRACLE OF BIRTH

Each day, around 8,000 wildebeest calves are born, often within minutes of their mothers going into labor. Incredibly, these newborns can stand and walk within minutes and run within hours, a crucial survival trait in a land teeming with predators.

WHY IS THE CALVING SEASON SPECIAL?

  • Massive Wildebeest Births: Around 8,000 calves are born each day at the peak of the season.

  • Predator Action: The abundance of newborns attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards, leading to dramatic hunting scenes.

  • Lush Green Landscapes: The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains are lush and fertile, providing plenty of food for the wildebeest mothers.

  • Easier Game Viewing: Unlike other parts of the migration where herds are constantly on the move, here they stay relatively stationary, making wildlife viewing spectacular.

WHY EXPERIENCE THE CALVING SEASON?

  • Unmatched Wildlife Action – Witness both the beauty of new life and the intensity of predator-prey interactions.

  • Spectacular Photography – The lush green plains and dramatic wildlife encounters make for unforgettable shots.

  • Exclusive Safari Experience – Unlike the crowded Mara River crossings, the calving season offers a more intimate and immersive safari adventure.

BEST PLACE TO WITNESS THE CALVING SEASON

  • Ndutu Plains (Serengeti & Ngorongoro Conservation Area) – Ideal for close-up wildlife action.

  • Southern Serengeti – Offers stunning landscapes and fewer crowds.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

  • January – March: The calving season marks the beginning of the Great Migration, as the wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, prepare for their long journey north toward the Grumeti River.

A Great Migration Safari is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, offering unparalleled wildlife encounters and stunning landscapes that make Africa’s wilderness truly unforgettable.
