The park – especially famous for its large elephant population. One among of the best places in Tanzania to observe elephants at relatively close range, often moving in family groups across the savannah.

The Elephant Experience

Elephants are one of Tarangire’s greatest attractions. Large herds can be seen feeding beneath baobabs, crossing open plains, drinking at the river or moving through the woodland. During the dry season, wildlife concentrations can become particularly impressive as animals are drawn toward the Tarangire River and other remaining water sources.

BIRDLIFE

Tarangire is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with a remarkable diversity of bird species.

• Kori bustards, Ostriches, Secretary birds, Yellow-necked spurfowl, Hornbills, Starlings, Eagles, Vultures, Herons, Egrets, Weavers, Bee-eaters, Rollers

The combination of wetlands, woodland and open grassland creates habitats for a wide variety of resident and migratory birds.
