One of Uganda’s most spectacular mountain destinations, protecting the central and eastern portions of the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda. Its highest summit is Mount Stanley, whose Margherita Peak reaches 5,109 metres (16,763 ft). This makes it Africa’s third-highest peak, after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.Often associated with the legendary “Mountains of the Moon,” the park is famous for snow-capped peaks, glaciers, deep valleys, waterfalls, high-altitude lakes and unusual Afro-alpine vegetation. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity.

The park is situated in western Uganda, along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It extends across the districts of Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo, with Kasese being the main nearby town and an important gateway to the mountain. The park is contiguous with Virunga National Park in the DRC, creating an important transboundary mountain ecosystem.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers approximately 996 km² (99,600 hectares). UNESCO records the World Heritage property at 99,600 hectares, while some Ugandan tourism sources round the figure to about 998 km².

During the second half of the twentieth century, increasing population pressure, agriculture, hunting and resource use created growing conservation challenges. After studies and consultations involving government agencies, conservation organizations and local communities, the government upgraded the Rwenzori Mountains to national park status in 1991.

Central Circuit Route: Nyakalengija

The Central Circuit is the classic route, starting from Nyakalengija/Mihunga, about 25 km north of Kasese. It passes through montane forest, bamboo, giant heather, Afro-alpine vegetation and the spectacular Bujuku Valley.

A typical summit itinerary takes around 7–9 days, depending on the objective. Important camps include Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena, Kitandara and Guy Yeoman. The route can lead to Margherita Peak (5,109 m) on Mount Stanley.

Kilembe Trail Route: Southern Circuit

The Kilembe Trail, also known as the Southern Circuit, begins near Kilembe, approximately 15 km west of Kasese. It provides a longer and highly scenic approach through the southern side of the Rwenzori range.

The route passes through rainforest, bamboo, giant heather and Afro-alpine zones, with attractions including waterfalls, high-altitude lakes and spectacular mountain views. A Margherita Peak expedition typically takes 7–8 days, giving trekkers more time for acclimatization.

Bukurungu Trail Route:

The Bukurungu Trail is a more remote and wilderness-oriented route. It begins in the Bukurungu/Kitumba area and provides access toward the northern side of the high Rwenzori mountains, including Mount Gessi.

It is less established and less frequently used than the Central Circuit and Kilembe routes, making it particularly suitable for trekkers looking for a quieter and more adventurous mountain experience.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

The best time to trek the Rwenzori Mountains is generally during the drier periods from June to August and December to February. These periods usually have less rainfall, relatively drier trails and better opportunities for clearer mountain views. However, the Rwenzori lies close to the Equator and can experience rain and mist even during the dry seasons.

June – August: Main Dry Season

This is one of the most popular periods for trekking and climbing. Trails are generally less wet, making the steep and boggy sections easier to manage, while clearer conditions can improve views of the high peaks.

December – February: Second Dry Season

This is another favorable trekking window. January and February are particularly useful months for mountain trekking, with generally more stable and drier conditions than the main rainy periods.

March – May: Long Rains

Rainfall is generally heavier during this period. Trails can become muddy, slippery and waterlogged, particularly in the boggy sections. Trekking remains possible, but conditions can be considerably more demanding and mountain visibility may be reduced.

September – November: Wetter Period

This period can also bring considerable rainfall and mist. November is particularly wet according to regional climate information, making trail conditions more challenging.
