MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK
Step into the spectacular volcanic mountain wilderness of Mount Elgon National Park, situated in eastern Uganda along the Kenya–Uganda border. Dominated by the ancient Mount Elgon massif, the park offers a dramatic landscape of misty montane forests, bamboo zones, alpine moorlands, waterfalls, caves, cliffs and rugged volcanic terrain.
Mount Elgon is an ancient extinct volcano with a vast caldera and a series of distinctive vegetation zones that change with altitude. The lower slopes are covered by lush montane forests, gradually giving way to bamboo and mixed Podocarpus forests, heathland and high-altitude Afro-alpine moorlands. At higher elevations, visitors can encounter unique vegetation including giant groundsels and lobelias, creating an extraordinary mountain environment.
The park is renowned for its spectacular caves, including Kitum Cave, as well as dramatic waterfalls, hot springs, deep valleys and scenic mountain formations. Other notable attractions include Sipi Falls in the wider Mount Elgon landscape and high-altitude peaks and viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramas across eastern Uganda and western Kenya.
Established as a national park in 1992, Mount Elgon National Park protects a rich montane ecosystem and provides habitat for numerous mammals, primates and bird species. Visitors can enjoy mountain hiking, nature walks, birdwatching, wildlife viewing, cave exploration, waterfalls and cultural experiences with communities living around the mountain.
From the mist-covered forests of the lower slopes to the giant groundsels and lobelias of the high-altitude moorlands, Mount Elgon National Park offers a remarkable combination of volcanic landscapes, mountain adventure, biodiversity, nature and cultural experiences in eastern Uganda.
